“Counterfeiting as perceived by consumers” study, new edition

40% of French consumers have already bought a counterfeit product!

The Union des Fabricants (Unifab), an association for the promotion and defence of intellectual property law – which brings together more than 200 companies from all sectors of activity, is delighted with the update of its IFOP survey ‘the French and the dangers of counterfeiting’, carried out as part of France anti-counterfeiting with the INPI, unveiled at the general meeting of the Comité National Anti-Contrefaçon (CNAC).

In France, according to the results of this survey, 40% of consumers have already bought counterfeit goods, which represents an increase of 3% since 2018.

The products most affected include clothing (excluding sportswear) 19%, perfumes 17%, leather goods 16% and sports goods 15%.

Another alarming figure is that 20% of 15-18 year-olds say they mainly consume counterfeit sports goods, which represents around 5% of all French people.

Among the other striking results of the study, 34% of consumers say they have already bought a counterfeit product thinking it was genuine. This figure rises to 36% for 15-18 year-olds. These facts demonstrate the need to take effective measures to put a stop to these scams.

Although the majority of counterfeit goods seem to be bought in markets or on the sly, 40% of French people think that counterfeit goods can be bought on social networks. This figure rises to 43% for 15-18 year-olds, an increase of 19% in 5 years.

23% of this age group have already bought counterfeit goods on online sales platforms, and 48% believe that there is no difference between a fake product and a genuine one. This figure is down 9% on the previous survey.
